Long-term partnership renewed: Instrumentation Technologies to equip Diamond-II with Libera Beam Diagnostics instrumentation
We are proud to announce that our company has been awarded the tender for the supply of Beam Loss Monitors (BLMs) and Beam Loss Detectors (BLDs) electronics as part of the ambitious Diamond-II upgrade at the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, Diamond Light Source.
This significant milestone marks over 20 years of continued collaboration with Diamond Light Source, which first became our customer in 2002 with an order of the Libera Electron.
Today, we are honored once again to support their scientific efforts with the delivery of 40 Libera BLMs and 150 Libera BLDs for the next-generation Diamond-II project.
About Diamond-II
Diamond Light Source has played a vital role in advancing global scientific research across the physical and life sciences. Now, through the Diamond-II project, the facility is embarking on a major upgrade that will transform its capabilities in terms of spatial resolution, data throughput, and user experience.
The upgrade will involve building a new storage ring and beamlines, alongside enhancements in optics, detectors, sample environments, automation, and computing infrastructure. These developments will support a wide range of integrated and correlative methods, opening new frontiers for scientific discovery.

A Testament to Long-Term Performance
This new order from Diamond Light Source is more than just a procurement—it’s an endorsement of the reliability and longevity of our technology. Our instruments, first installed in 2003, have stood the test of time and performance. Being chosen again for Diamond-II highlights the trust our customers place in the quality of our solutions.
About Libera Beam Loss Monitor
The Libera Beam Loss Monitor (BLM) is a readout unit for signals coming from the beam-loss detectors, featuring dedicated and configurable beam-loss monitoring processing functionalities, such as the counting mode algorithm. Thanks to the instrument’s high temporal resolution (8 ns), it provides detailed insight into sub-turn and intra-pulse losses. Adjustable input termination (50 Ohm and high impedance) allows for fast losses monitoring and very high sensitivity on the other hand. With a software plug-in, it can also generate interlock output upon reaching certain adjustable criteria.
Libera BLM connects to up to four beam-loss detectors, controls their gain and provides them with power.
About Libera Beam Loss Detector
The Libera Beam Loss Detector (BLD) is a compact and lightweight detector designed for precise and rapid detection of beam losses, capable of identifying single-electron loss events as well as larger losses during injection. Its working principle is based on the combination of a scintillator and a fast photomultiplier tube. The gain of its output is adjustable with a control voltage which enables a wide dynamic range. It is powered and controlled directly by Libera BLM.
