Libera Workshop: Meet you Again in Autumn 2008!
The 3rd Libera Workshop took place on the 24th and 25th of September 2007. The Workshop had more than 25 participants from 13 laboratories (Alba, Anka, Astrid, Australian Synchrotron, BNL, Diamond, Elettra, ESRF, HLS, INFN LNF, LNLS, Petra III, Soleil) and commercial companies such as Dimtel (US) and MTT (Japan), representing 11 countries and 4 continents.
The morning of the second day focused on the presentations from the Libera users themselves. K. Scheidt, ESRF, J.C. Denard, Synchrotron Soleil, E. Huttel, ANKA, I. Krouptchenkov, Petra III, M. Lonza, Elettra, G. Rehm, Diamond Light Source, E. Plouviez, ESRF, and M. Abbott, Diamond Light Source shared with the participants their valuable experience from using Libera during regular operation and for the building of the fast orbit feedback system. The integration into the control system, the suitability of Libera for planned machine upgrades and solutions to machine specific issues were also presented and discussed in this session.

Instrumentation Technologies Awarded the Silver Gazelle
The Libera Workshop represents a continuation of the initial institute-industry collaboration, and is a chance for users and industry to share information and experiences. Such collaboration guarantees that systems are built to well defined user specifications following best industrial practices, which allows accelerator groups to concentrate on frontier developments.
The effort Instrumentation Technologies is putting forth in establishing links between cutting-edge science and industry on the international level have not remained unnoticed in Slovenia. In October the company won the Silver Gazelle, awarded to the fast-growing, developing and job-creating companies in the country. A distinctive characteristic of the best gazelle companies is the ability to carefully listen to the demands of customers and constantly offer break-through products.
Release 1.80 Will Be Available End of November
The Libera Wish List was presented to the staff of Instrumentation Technologies and discussed in detail at the workshop. The developers of version 1.80 used the conclusions of the discussion as a direct input for preparing the release, which will contain, but is not limited to the following:
- Run-time configurable switching source and delay
- Postmortem offset configurable at run-time, buffer size selectable at startup (max. 256k samples)
- Interlock cause compound in I/Q data
- Interlock status reporting, with status kept until reset
- FA coefficients (Polyphase FIR, Notch1 and Notch2) configuration via CSPI
- Feature register indicator of implemented modules plus additional customer feature register (32bit each)
- Saving DSC coefficients automatically remounts root file system in read-write
All parties agreed to continue meeting and discussing new needs on a regular basis. You can join the discussion at http://www.i-tech.si/forum/ and benefit from the new releases subscribing to the Upgrades and Support package.
First FPGA Development Kits Shipped to the Libera Users
Following up your interest in building the FPGA code using Simulink/System Generator, we introduced the FPGA Development Kit as announced in the last I-Tech issue. It has already been shipped to the first Libera Electron and Libera Brilliance users and we are looking forward to their feedback. You can find more information on the Libera FPGA Development Kit webpage.
The FPGA Development Kit, which gives you the freedom to develop your own applications, is available for free. Do not hesitate to request it!
As always I’d love to know, what you think, and hear your ideas for future issues (send me an email at: mojca@i-tech.si). Until December,
Mojca Franceskin
