Successful BPM upgrade at ESRF We are pleased to start the first issue of this year’s newsletter with great news, which we have just received: ESRF successfully upgraded their storage ring with 224 Libera Brilliance units in less than three months after receiving first batch of modules. We would like to congratulate the ESRF team for their fluent and fast commissioning and wish them a great success in achieving their goals!
Want to improve measurement precision and achieve sub-micron stability? Close collaboration between Libera users and our R&D group enables constant development of Libera Brilliance with regards to the increasing requirements for beam stability and users needs for improving the BPM system. We are pleased to inform you that now each Libera Brilliance unit is even more capable since the standard product now contains the latest release (2.02) and also the fast global orbit feedback building blocks. If you would like to try it for free, please do not hesitate to write me at: mojca.strehar@i-tech.si.
If you are already a Libera Brilliance or Libera Electron user, you have different options for improving performance and add new functionalities to your existing units and thus get the most out of Libera. You can either:
- improve measurement precision (by upgrading your Libera Electron to Libera Brilliance)
- add new functionalities (check the new features of the release 2.02 at: http://www.i-tech.si/index.php) or/and
- make your Libera units ready for building the fast global orbit feedback (with an even faster communication between Liberas and with the control system).
All the options are described more in details at: http://www.i-tech.si/products.php?meni2=54&meni1=3&menu1_naslov=Libera%20Brilliance.

Libera Brilliance Single Pass measurements at FERMI@Elettra and SPARC Libera Brilliance is an accurate diagnostics tool also for single pass position measurements and can be used for recording single bunches limited in time. This functionality is included in the newest Libera Brilliance software Release 2.02.
Measurements on the real beam were performed at Elettra (Sincrotrone Trieste) and SPARC (INFN) and proved the feasibility of measuring such signals. In the white paper (at: http://www.i-tech.si/support.php?meni1=7) you can have a look at the single pass measurements with Libera Brilliance, which include: temperature stability, beam current stability, root-mean-square and more. We would like to thank the experts from Sincrotrone Trieste and INFN at this occasion.
We recommend the use of Libera Brilliance for performing the single pass measurements for:
- pickup buttons and striplines
- synchrotron light sources: injection diagnostics, beam position monitor applications in LINACs and transfer lines
- pulse measurements in the field of FEL machines
5th Libera Workshop in September The yearly gathering of Libera users is scheduled on 16 – 18 September 2009. The workshop will concentrate on practical presentations of the Libera family members, new developments regarding the beam stabilization and users’ presentation about the use of Libera products at their machines. As the last year, there will be an optional day dedicated to the hands-on Libera training. We are trying to adapt the program of the workshop to your needs, so we would be pleased to receive your suggestions and wishes for the content.

Are you coping with coupled bunch instabilities? The Libera Bunch-by-Bunch Feedback system helps you damp the beam instabilities, which are usually caused by cavity high order modes, resistive wall impedance, interactions of the beam with other objects and ion instabilities. Our solution consists of the digital processing unit, Libera Bunch-by-Bunch, and Libera Bunch-by-Bunch Front End. Both units will help you close the bunch-by-bunch feedback loop and thus improve the beam stability. To increase bunch purity, bunch cleaning can be carried through using the FPGA embedded and configurable NCO (Numerically Controlled Oscillator) generator in a sweep mode selectable per bunch.
Australian Synchrotron and Canadian Light Source are already using our solution; the Taiwan Light Source will be the next machine to have both products. Diamond Light Source, ESRF, ALBA and ANKA are the additional members of accelerator community utilizing the Libera Bunch-by-Bunch units for combating coupled bunch instabilities.
Know more about the Libera Bunch-by-Bunch Feedback system at: http://www.i-tech.si/products.php?meni1=11 and keep visiting the web page as the new releases for both products will be soon available!
Instrumentation Technologies visit to the US labs Instrumentation Technologies will be visiting US labs at the end of March. Our technical support and development teams will be conducting one day seminars on the east and west coasts from 30 March to 3 April. We will go into detail demonstrating Libera Brilliance and Libera Bunch-by-Bunch, as well our newest products, Libera LLRF, a state of the art digital stabilization instrument for RF systems, and Libera Photon. We are looking forward to good feedback and interesting discussions.
If you are also interested in a seminar or live demonstration about our solutions for beam stability, we would be pleased to visit you. Let us know by contacting Valentina.
