Dear Libera reader,

We are pleased to invite you to Slovenia for the 13th Libera Workshop, which will be held from May 31st to June 2nd. This year we bring you to Vipolže, in the gorgeous Goriška Brda wine region.

While being enchanted by our fabulous landscapes, you’ll have a great opportunity to meet with world-level experts in instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators. You will learn about new Libera applications and features, and the ways they are used around the world. We welcome you to present the status of your projects and to take part in the training sessions led by our engineers.

With more than 200 units in use, last year confirmed the high level of interest in Libera Spark and the other applications developed on the same platform. In the meantime, we have introduced a much more powerful platform, which we would like to hear your thoughts on: nobody knows the challenges in this field better than you.

Last year we highlighted how projects can benefit from partnerships between industry and institutes, and this year we build on it with the slogan “Time for Synergy”. We can see how the approach to particle accelerator projects is changing: challenging timelines and requirements are a call for companies to play a different role.

We see synergy in companies collaborating with each other, being proactive with users and taking more responsibility for the results. This is particularly true for medical accelerator projects in which we have started to play a significant role.

Some of this year’s highlights include:

  • New applications, features and platforms: which direction should instrumentation move to be ready for the future challenges in the field?
  • Insights on commissioning results from new projects around the world: Max IV, NSRRC, Juelich, Sesame, Solaris and others.
  • Synergy: how can companies work together with users to deliver better value to the project?

The workshop will be held on June 1st. On May 31st there will be optional training sessions on Libera instruments and a welcome drink. Satellite meetings are planned for June 2nd, upon prior arrangement.

This year’s Libera Workshop be held in a beautiful villa in the small town of Vipolže in the municipality of Goriška Brda, Slovenia. The municipality was established in 1994 and includes 45 beautiful settlements, giving its residents and visitors a wealth of amazing and breathtaking views. The landscape is covered with vineyards and orchards, and an amazing view is only one of the things you can enjoy here. World class wines and tasty food are part of the culture and every gourmet’s dreams in Brda.

Even though the municipality itself has less than 6000 residents, there is a lot going on and many events are held every year. One of the oldest and most interesting cultural events here is the Cherry Festival, whose tradition goes back to 1966. There are many sport and cultural activities during the day, including the tasting of cherry-based dishes, and live music in the evening.

Here are some of the places you should visit during your stay at the Libera Workshop this year:

Postojna cave

The Postojna Cave (Slovene: Postonjska jama) is a 24-km-long karst cave system near Postojna, 45 minutes away from Goriška Brda. The Pivka river was one of the main creators of this magnificent cave system, which was being shaped for centuries before the caves got to their final form as we know it today. To date, the Postojna Cave has been visited by more than 38 million people, making it one of the world’s most visited caves.

Soča Valley

One of the main attractions of the Soča Valley is the beautiful emerald-green colored water of the Soča river. During World War I, it formed the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so don't be surprised if you find some military relics. Besides the beauty of nature, you can also enjoy many water sports, such as swimming, kayaking, rafting and canyoning, and a wide variety of other outdoor activities.

Panovec forest

The Panovec Forest lies between Kromberk and Rožna Dolina right at the southern edge of the town of Nova Gorica. The paths and trails that run through the forest attract a great number of visitors in all seasons. Lovers of peace and nature, joggers, cyclists, walkers, mushroom hunters and data acquisition specialists all meet each other in the Panovec Forest.

The town of Bled is known for its glacial lake, which makes it a major tourist attraction. The incredible natural beauty of Bled and its surroundings mean that it ranks among the most beautiful alpine resorts, and it is renowned for its mild, healing climate and thermal lake water. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. The town is also known in Slovenia for its vanilla and cream pastry.

The small island in the middle of the lake is home to the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck, and the island can be accessed by pletna, a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat. The island on Lake Bled has 99 steps and it is a local wedding tradition for the groom to carry his new bride up these steps while she remains silent.
